An interview with Ryan Dempster
MARK DEROSA: I'm here in Phoenix, interviewing Ryan Dempster. First off, congratulations on making the All-Star Game, your second time. I just want to know how it felt to pitch in the All-Star Game and perform the way you did?
RYAN DEMPSTER: I'm not going to lie, it felt good. It was nice to be out there at Yankee Stadium, the last year of the stadium. Eight years ago, I went to the All-Star Game and didn't pitch, which I solely put the blame on the manager for that one. We lost, 3-2, so he didn't really know what he was doing. He'll have a good career if he keeps going with it.
It was incredible at Yankee Stadium -- 55,000 people, and to pitch the bottom of the ninth inning was a lot of fun and there was a lot of adrenaline. It was truly an honor to be there with all those guys and I wish we could've pulled out the victory.
DEROSA: Did you get a goody bag?
DEMPSTER: I got all kinds of goodies. I got a nice goody bag from Nike with all kinds of golf shirts and T-shirts and shorts. I got a really cool brief case. You open it up, and there's a pair of spikes and shoes inside. I got an All-Star serving table -- that was pretty sweet. My wife got a goody bag. I don't wear lip gloss, so I guess that was for her. There were a lot of cool things.
DEROSA: You had a great first half -- some could say you're the MVP of the team in the first half. Are you excited now to be a starter again?
DEMPSTER: I like it. I like being out there every fifth day. Hopefully the guys can count on me to be ready and be prepared and give us a chance to win. It's been a lot of hard work. The first half was great, but I want to have a better second half and hopefully do something special here.
DEROSA: Do you think pitchers should deserve a chance to win the MVP even though they only play once every five days?
DEMPSTER: That's a good question. I think so. I think when you look at a closer, like a dominating closer, like the years Gagne and Smoltz had, or a starting pitcher who goes out and makes every start, pitches 200 something innings -- you see how valuable a Brandon Webb is to the Arizona Diamondbacks, or a Jake Peavy to the Padres. Obviously, position players are out there every day playing, but I think sometimes pitchers can have as big an impact on a team and be just as valuable.
DEROSA: OK, totally off baseball -- we travel a lot. Is there anything you do in particular on the plane to pass the time?
DEMPSTER: Sometimes I'll play cards if there's a card game going. A lot of times, I'll read motivational books or self-help books.
DEROSA: If you play cards, what's your game of choice and who plays with you?
DEMPSTER: If I had my first choice, it'd be "Go Fish" but not a lot of guys on the team play that. I don't know if they weren't taught that growing up. A lot of times, I'll play "Texas Hold 'em." There will be guys like Marquis, D-Lee, Lilly, and yourself. Every once in a while, you hop in there.
DEROSA: And who is the best and who is the worst card player?
DEMPSTER: I think the best is yourself. I really do. I admire your ability to kind of know the situation and know what the right percentages are and know when to bluff and not to. I think the worst player is D-Lee. I think he bets every time just to bet.
DEROSA: You're known around the league as a jokester. Do you enjoy that or do you think it takes away from how good a player you are?
DEMPSTER: I think people think I'm always messing around and always joking around, and I don't think they realize how hard I work and how much I care when I'm out there. It's baseball, it's a game, you want to have fun, you want to have a good time and enjoy it. I think the more relaxed you are, the better you play. But at the same time, I'm as competitive as anybody and I hate to lose. I live for my teammates to do well. I think sometimes everybody thinks, "Oh, he's the happy go lucky jokester guy and he doesn't care." But I care a lot.
DEROSA: I'm going to set a scene for you: Kerry Wood on the mound, Game 7 of the World Series in Wrigley Field. Ground ball to second, DeRosa throws it to D-Lee, game over, Cubs are World Series champs. What happens?
DEMPSTER: Pandemonium. I'd say the top of the Budweiser building blows off. People storm the field. Huge chunks of ivy are ripped off the walls. Police cars are turned over on Addison, on Waveland, on Sheffield, and you can't walk within a 45-block radius of Wrigley Field because people will be drinking there for seven to 10 days. What a great feeling.
RYAN DEMPSTER: I'm not going to lie, it felt good. It was nice to be out there at Yankee Stadium, the last year of the stadium. I am going to carve out the state of Arizona from every map I see, and burn it in effigy.

Typical B.S reel us in with a good half then slap us in the face. Tell double play D-Lee to act like he cares.

I especially love that last question. I really enjoy these interviews, as they're endlessly amusing. I hope to see many more in the future!
Keep up the great work, Mark.

Great inteview! I love some of the questions that go beyond baseball. I believe Dempster in saying that he cares, and it great that y'all allow joy and fun when you can! That image of winning the world series is amazing and hope and believe this is the year. These few games are nothing, just keep going and it will turn back to our favor!

Hiya Mark!
I hope you all aren't stressing too much right now. I know that we have struggled this last week or so since the all star break, but you guys just need to relax and let the game flow. Thanks for the interview with Demps! I love that you asked questions that were outside of baseball as well. It's always interesting to go inside someone's life beyond what the media sees. Hope the bats pick up during tomorrows game, but win or lose, the Cubs are always going to be my favorite team. Also, I forgot to mention congrats to Fontenot, Ward and Edmonds for the homers and Theriot for his hitting streak! Just remember to go out there and have fun!

MARK DEROSA PLEASE READ HAVE WHOLE TEAM READ THIS JUST SO YOU GUYS REMEMEBER HOW IMPORTANT A WORLD SERIES WOULD BE TO US.

I just want to watch the games and cheer u guys on and be proud to be a cubs fan cause really no matter how much we suck im there all day 100 percent. im just asking lets get it going let make history lets end a lot of suffering watever happen tonight happen tonight lets get out there and win some ball games

Great read a conversation between two of the Cubs hardest working and team oriented members. This team is special and I feel it coming. The Cubs first in 100 years. This team has overcome adversity all year and will do it again. The bats will wake up. How anyone could question the work ethics of either of you beats me. Your hard work has been showing and paying off on the field. Keep up the good work and finish this season off right! Mark thanks for the good reads.

Hang in there, DeRo. You're not all playing well now...but you'll snap out of it today's game, I'm sure. Peaks and valleys a season makes and you are in a valley right now. Luv ya just the same. Se ya on the next peak soon!.

Love the pulse DeRosa... the question to Dempster about him being a jokster... I was at the Memorial Day game when Dempster was pitching and sat 2nd row from the bulpen. Watching him warm up, you can see on his face how serious he is about the game. (But he is funny though)
Let's start winning games.. Go Cubs

You're the best DeRosa! I'd rather have you than Roberts any time! A few things. First off, I'm pretty sure most cubs fans already carved out Arizona from their maps after last postseason (sidenote: the sweep early in the year was sweet, sweet justice!). Second, um...we (the NL) lost the all-star game, so I'm rooting for the mayhem to take place after game 5 at Wrigley. Third, congrats Ryan Theriot for bringing into the world another 'rioter!

You guys are great! . . .You'll get back in gear soon. You are home almost the entire month of August. THAT's when what you will show what you are made of.

I too vote for a Reed Johnson interview next, mostly to find out what's behind that foo-man-choo.

Hahahaha I love those interviews. Everyday we get the interviews that are all about baseball but it's nice every now and then to get some insight on you guys cause you are normal people too, haha.
So I was writing this comment thinking to myself, "I comment on every post DeRo makes (like most people) but I wonder if he reads the comments."
So my question to you is: Do you read the comments Mark??Stephaniesteponme.mlblogs.com

Great Interview! I don't think I have ever wished for a riot more! And this time I am not talking about an rbi single
from a middle infielder! Also, for any cub fans in Minnesota I am hosting an offense anonymous meeting at my apartment. It's only when you don't have access to something that you realize you have an addiction. That said, if the guys could maybe get me a fix or two...SOON...then I may be off the wagon for good!

Great interview Mark. I love the World Series scenario...I also changed it in my head to game 5...Know that even though I live in Texas, I will be in Chicago when you guys win the World Series. Compared to the lifetime I've waited for a Cubs championship, the thousand miles between me and Wrigley is a simple Sunday afternoon stroll!

It was a really good interview. Two of the guys who are carrying the team to what looks to be a great year (it will only be if we win it all).
Also the World Series scenario was great, but I really would prefer it ended in 4 games or in 5 because it can't end in the 7th game being at Wrigley because the NL lost the All-Star Game, so 4th or 5th game would be great.
Thanks for making me dream again with a World Championship, just keep playing the way you both are and we will make it.

Hiya Mark!
Great game tonight, guys! The bats were swinging hard! We are so happy to have Sori back and congratulations to D. Lee for the homerun, Reed for the GRAND SLAM and I thought that Lilly's performance couldn't have been beat. People don't expect much from most pitchers when they are up to bat, but he singled and then I really enjoyed the stolen base!! It was great!! Keep playing hard and keep the faith. You are a very loved team and Cubs have the best fans!!

Hey, just wanted to say first that I loved the interview, which was hilarious (I think you set Demp up for some punch lines a few times though) and greatly appreciated since it helps us get a better feeling for who you guys are as people, and secondly, that it was great to see team mates communicating like that since it will be very key to our team going all the way. I think Dempster is right that you play your best when relaxed (relaxed, calm, and yet focused). It certainly seems to have been working for him this year. Good luck to you guys, and some of us Cubs fans will be rooting for you no matter what teams you end up on. I continue to root for Patterson, Hollandsworth (though he stopped playing now, regretfully), Maddux, and Todd Walker. Here's hoping the Cubs go all the way this year, and that you guys ignore the rare fickle "fans" who boo anyone going through a 2-week slump. Good luck, and God bless!

Great interview, Mark! I hope to read more of these with other guys throughout the rest of the season. Gotta love Demp and his sense of humor!! In fact, I love all of you guys! I became a die-hard fan in 1982 when I was 14. The teams of the 80s were "my guys" -- I knew them all by name, number, position, stats, everything. I felt like they were my brothers. I haven't felt as "close" to the teams since, although I always love my Cubbies. But this year is different. I feel as much and perhaps more for the 2008 Cubs than any other season I've followed. It fills me with joy to watch you guys play!
Thanks for relieving my programmed sense of doom with a great win last night! What a job by Lilly, and the bats really woke up. I hope they stay awake. Some nice hitting by Ramy and Geo late in the game to break their o-fers. You think getting rid of that ridiculous moustache helped Reed at all? :o) Our healing thoughts now go to Woody and Jimmy (whooda thought I'd ever be referring to Jim Edmonds in endearing terms???) -- we need them both. We need all of you! I love all of you.
Thanks again, Mark. My favorite player of the 80s was Jody Davis. You wear his number well.

To supplement Dempster's response of the cubs taking it down in the world series, allow me to add this:
Earthquakes and volcanoes, dead rising from the grave, human sacrafices, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria!
Sure it was from ghostbusters 2, but I'm fairly certain the same applies in this situation too.
Have fun out there guys, you're playing basebal for a living. I think you two get that though :)

I'm glad we are finally hitting again. Now that we are home lets just hope it carries into this series. I'm so glad you did an interview with Dempster finally!! He is so funny. I was cracking up so hard when you asked him about the card playing & the World Series question, which is not too far from the truth of what would happen!! Yes its the second half and still early, but we need to make sure that we keep the Brewers at a distance. I mean look at what we did to them last year around this time. So keep the confidence and bats hot from here on and out..then We will be fine.

DeRo and Ryan,
Congrats on last nights game! I hope you do get a chance to read over all of the heart felt comments everyone is writing, cause the team really needs to know that we support all of you when the hitting is good and when the hitting is off. I am in California and today on the Mark and Brian radio show they talked about the ceremonial send off that was given to the infamous Bartman baseball. I think all of the people who keep bringing up all of the past need to get over it and live in the now! Now the Cubs are in first. Now is our time!
Too all of the fans that get to go to the games at Wrigley, don't stop cheering. Even when our Cubs are down in runs, keep up a positive SPIRIT. Watching the game on WGN, one can see we get quiet and lose sight of the fact that they can comeback from behind and win! Can't wait for October, I'll be in Chicago, wouldn't miss it! Go Cubs :-)

HI Mark, Great catch Thursday Night!!!!! Everyone is talking about the slump since the start of the second half. People have to realize even in the first half road games have not been kind to the team, and the first six games were road games. Now that you guys are home, I know you will show everyone you guys are back on target. I am optomistic, even when you guys are down in the score I tell my husband you guys will come back. On the Dempster interview, me being a Police officer, did not really like the comment of turning over Police cars. Huge celebrations and partying for a week is good, Our cars are crap to begin with, LOL but for now thats all we have. we need a peacefull but great celebration. I love the team and know that your hearts are in it. GO CUBS!!!!!!

Hey Mark, great interview. I'm not sure why everybody is freaking out over a little slump. We've done great with a few injuries slowing us down. Do these people not realize we ARE the BEST in the National league and switch off very often to the best in the MLB. We're getting healthy again and the future is ours. CUB NATION! Alive and Kicking! With Demps getting his first road win, I believe we will have a better 2nd half on the road. Even though right now it doesn't seem like it. Please tell the guys to continue to inspire and amaze me. If you could see all the Cub flags that are appearing on front porches everywhere here in Lockport you would beam with PRIDE! Even the fans of the other guys in Chicago are trying to compete with flaggage! ha ha!! Hands down it's Cub Nation everywhere! Have no fear. . . . . a HOMESTAND is here! Oh and lest I forget get, "GREAT freakin' (game saving)CATCH Thursday night!" Love ya Mark! CubFanSupreme K

Dear Mark,
Why won't you play Go-Fish with Demp? Texas Hold 'em is just a fad, but Go-Fish is a timeless classic. I think you can even get a special G0-Fish game deck. If you need one, I will send it to you.
I want to make sure that Demps isn't lonely on the plane. So do your part and play Go-Fish with a Canadian once in a while.
Thanks for your good work.

Can the offense please start helping out the pitchers? If I was Dempster, or especially Harden, I'd be pretty upset right now. I can't blame them if they are upset with the offense.

~Hey Mark!~
I know the Cubs have been struggling as of late to get runs in and you all can say just get it done, but it really isn't as easy as that or everyone could do it. I also think that too much stock was put in Soriano coming back. You guys played great while he was on the DL and yes, he is a power player, but just go back to what you were doing when he wasn't there. Have faith in the swing of the bats and start letting the pitch counts run up again. Win or lose, you're still the best team out there. You guys really care about your fans and the people around you, you don't trash talk other teams to the media (ie...White Sox...) You just have a lot of class and a great club. I would just like to see you guys go out there having fun again instead of stressing the losses. The Cubs will always have a great fan base, with a good share here in Utah! Keep it up, DeRo and thanks for stepping up to playing so many positions, you're indespensable! We love our Cubbies here in Utah!
XOXO...Milli
Oh and major Kudos to Lilly and D. Lee for visiting that fan in the hospital and also for having him throw out the first pitch in today's game. Also, the care package that was sent from the Cubs. This is a few of the many things that shows you're hearts are in the right place.

It's bad enough that "Cub fans" , I'm sorry "Wrigleyville fans" of my generation are so uneducated about the game and it's structure, but now the players don't realize game 7 is an impossible scenario this year!!! Last year I listened to radio callers hope the Cubs would play the Brewers in the first round of the playoffs, another impossibilitiy, can't play your own division in the first round guys.. If I had a dollar for every "Cub fan" I know who can't name half of the starting lineup I'd be rich. You might sellout every night but pay attention to the game and the sport as a whole. Also the game lasts 9 innings not just 7 when beer sales stop for a lot of you "fans" who were unaware!!! Kudos to the tribune this morning for exposing yet another ignorance of it's own team. Happy annniversary!!!

jjt576 is so smart. I wish every fan took @#$* so serious, then maybe we could all be anal about the great American game of baseball and take all the fun out of it...what a life. Speaking of a life, why don't you go out and get yourself one...it's a good time...

DeRo, you talk about Aramis being mvp and i can't argue, but i don't know where this team would be without you. Your ability to play anywhere and play as though it were your natural spot is unbelievable, and your bat has a heck of a lot of pop this year. there is something special going on this year, in spite of this losing streak, and you're a big part of it. Love you and go get the Reds tonight!!!
