New season, new challenges

We're on the road now, and I try not to worry about the home vs. road thing. Every season presents its own challenges. Last year, we were answering questions about why we couldn't hit left-handed pitching. The season has different ways of challenging you.

This year, for me, it's challenging me personally in a lot of different ways. Definitely, I'm not happy with the way I'm playing defense at home. It's getting used to a new infield -- and the grounds crew has been grinding it out, trying to get it to play to its capabilities. It's like breaking in a new glove. It takes time to get used to it. It may sound like an excuse, but you've seen a lot of balls take some tricky hops on guys, and not just our team. You just have to bear down and get through the transition period. Ultimately, the field looks beautiful.

My strikeouts are ridiculously high. I don't kid anyone to think I don't know what the fans are saying -- I have a tendency to get a little big with my swing and don't cut down with two strikes. I'm the first to tell people I choke up with two strikes. My swing might not change, but the thought process is different. That's something that's bothered me this year. The season wil challenge you every year in different ways. Last year, I think I was hitting about .240 at this time, and people were wondering, 'What is this guy about?' I try not to dwell too much on it, and try to bask in the team's success right now.

On Sunday, we won the game, 5-3, and I left six guys on base. At the end of the day, we win 5-3, and you go back to the hotel room and you go over those at-bats, and you're frustrated with your own personal performance, but it's a team. That is the one thing I'll stress about this year is how close we are as a group right now. Hopefully, it continues.

We enjoy being around each other, we're having a lot of fun playing together. Everyone on the roster has contributed to us winning a ballgame. That's big. When I first came into the league with the Braves, there were so many superstars that I never felt accepted until I got a big hit that mattered and won a game. That's when your teammates can look at you and say he's serving a purpose and he's making a difference in our success. There's not a guy in this clubhouse who can't say that.

Hey MArk dont worry about everyone has bad days i think you are doing just fine 295 to 300 batting average is great and i love how this team has a diffrent hero each day i think that is what makes this team so special is that it is not just on one or two guys to carry the team keep up the good work and let show people that we can win on the road

Mark,

Keep up the hard work!! There is a reason u are in the bigs and the trash talkers aren't, they can't do what you do.

Dude... I don't care what the other fans are saying. People get hot and people go cold. You'll get back on track.

Don't worry Mark, the true fans are ganna stick by you and the team no matter whats going on. It's what Cubs fans are good at!

I have never been more proud to say that I am a Cubs fan.

Keep it up chap. Haha

Hey Mark. "The Pulse" is great! It's very interesting to read how you and the team are doing, especially from a player's point of view. As a Cub Fan for 22 years from NY, i have never been to Wrigley to see you guys play but hope to this year. It's nice to read what you and the team are doing and how everyone is contributing and playing like a whole team, rather than worrying about individual accomplishments. I'm sure other fans would agree with me when i say this is the best overall Cubs team i have witnessed. You guys never quit, never give up, and have the confidence to try and win every game. It's also nice to see in your blog that you are not only a person who gets paid to play a game, but that you are a human being who obviously loves what you do! Keep up the great job! GO CUBS!

Mark.
You are one of the most versatile players around-- a true asset to the Cubs. I have been a fan since I was a little girl and true fans appreaciate all your hard work. I think this team is a class act on and off the field. We were at the Build a bear giveaway day and my 8 year old son is a die hard fan and little league player. Bob Howry came out with his kids and signed autographs for the kids by the fence. My son has not put down his signed glove and makes sure everyone sees it at his own games. Thank you to a team who putting smiles on so many faces!!

Mark,

Anyone who loves what they do headtrips their own performance, so what you write about is understandable. But from a fan standpoint, you are nothing but a core, VITAL asset to this amazing team. We're all rooting for you and grateful you're here, in cold spells as well as in hot ones.

Thanks, too, for maintaining this blog! It must be hard with such a crazy schedule, but it means a lot to us out here rooting for you and rooting for the team.

Enjoy the success! Thanks for representing what makes the Cubs so great.

Meghan

Mark,
I think you are FAR too hard on yourself. One thing I have always always admired about the sport of baseball is the team effort. Win as a team, lose as a team as well. I am 51 and a cradle Cub fan. I have been dragging my kids to games since they could walk. My mother, daughter and I phone each other during games and we play the victory song at the end. Love That Song!!!! Been trying to find it EVERYWHERE!!! We love the BUMP the three of you give each other at the end of the game. You give your all. No one could ask for more. Please don't be so hard on yourself. Mom, my daugher & I share a birthday the same day in Aug. Trying to find out how to wish them Happy Bithday during the game. That is my goal. You are achieving yours.

First time do'n this Mark, just back on the internet. There's only a few things I live for in this world and Cubs baseball is a main one. Don't b so hard on yourself, u r one of the best position players in the game and very important to the chemistry and success of this TEAM!! Go Mark! Go Cubbies!! Tommy

Don't worry Mr. Derosa! I think you are a fine baseball player! My Dad gives me tips when I am batting with 2 strikes. I cut down on my swing and try and make contact. With me ahead of the count, I foucuse on hitting a line drive. And I am sure you have heard this before, keep your glove down on groundballs. Sorry if I am bothering you,

Cubbyfanjohn

From the perspective of a lifelong Cubs fan (Wrigley brick and all) I have seen a lot of ups and downs - in fact, in the bleak years I always comment I should join a 12-step program....."Hello, my name is Kate and I am a Cubs fan!"

This year is is completely insane! I cannot get enough Cubs and you are certainly an integral part of this TEAM. Seriously, the true blue fans out there share great pride in each of your accomplishments and feel your pain when the performance is sluggish from time to time, but this is baseball and I personally am thrilled there are no rock stars this year. Never before as a fan have I felt the team's spirit like this - you guys are going to do it this year - there is no doubt, and you will do it one day at a time as a TEAM with the good days and the bad days. You certainly have lots of good days headed your way and I will be watching and cheering you on!

Are you kidding me? You are a huge asset to this team! I am a lifelong diehard who now lives in Texas. I can only see the games that come on WGN, ESPN, or FOX. During the CSN games, I sit pathetically at my computer and watch MLB Gameday. This team is just fun to watch. I love the "never say die" attitude; you guys are never out of any game. I am proud to be a Cubs fan!

Mark, I think anyone who has been reading this blog two seasons running now can recall the final post you wrote last year after game 3 of the playoff series. You were unable to come through with the bases loaded and you were kicking yourself left and right. Ever since I read that post, I have turned into one of your biggest supporters. Every single time you come up to bat with a chance to get a big hit in the game, I always hope, with a little extra umph, that you will come through. I played softball for a dozen years and I had my fair share of failures in those situations as well, but I never forgot the times I came through. So, a few days ago, when you guys came all the way back from 8 down, I couldn't have been happier that you knocked in the go-ahead run with that clutch homer.

You really are my favorite player on this roster and maybe one of my favorite Cubs of all time. Just keep being you!

Mark, you are part of a franchise that has an ugly history of stranding far too many men on base. I think it's wonderful that you are willing to take personal responsibility for your part of it. As long as you are always thinking about how to improve your patience at the plate (and making the necessary adjustments) you are doing your team a service, and your fans proud. Last night's game was terrific to watch (and only slightly overshadowed by the Pens hanging on against the Redwings), please keep up this gorgeous momentum!

Hey Mark
Great game on 5/29! Congrats on that game winning homer.(Been prayin for that and it came true) That must have been some incredible rush for you. No doubt you are one of the stars on this team. This last post you sound kinda down. Don't be. YOU ROCK!! Stay positive. Read all these great comments on this blog. Glad to see Jim Edmonds doing well. And Big-Z..he cracks me up!

I think the road worries are a bit extreme in some cases. There are at least two or three games I can think of that we lost on the road, that could easily have gone the other way. With that said, it is REALLY nice seeing a Cubs team play so well at home. Needless to say, I can't remember a team playing so well for us at Wrigley.

Hope your hand is better!

Hey Mark, I know how you feel about not coming through in the clutch situations. Ive played several years of baseball myself and now i play competitive softball. But at the same time i can remember you coming through more times than not. Anytime the bases are juiced and you step up i always say "Heres a couple runs coming in". Im a long time Cubs fan from Knoxville TN and ill be driving up in July for my 1st game. I can guarantee that when I leave I will have purchased my #7 Derosa jersey. The whole team is doing an awesome job this year and its great to be a fan, especially where im from cause its all kinds Braves fans. Keep doing what you do and you will be fine.

I love this year's club (which is really pretty similar to last year's club - who I was pretty fond of too) because every day there is a different hero - sometimes it's the guys we expect it to be (who we probably put wayyy too much pressure on most of the time) and sometimes it's the guys that surprise us (who probably deserve wayyy more credit most of the time). It really shows that you guys have fun playing together and that is so much fun for the fans, it really is. If you're smiling -- we're smiling. And thanks for giving us so much to smile about! (P.S. Hope the digits feel better after Helton's clown feet stomped all over them.)

Your doin just fine just keep up the hard work and it will come to you. I hope i get to come see you guys play at wrigley cause this is the year.

#1 12yr. Cubs fan

Mark, you are a good player - versatile and talented. Some of the catches I've seen you make defy gravity! I know how frustrating it can be when your performance is not what you know it can be - so just keep your head in the game and do what you know how to do. You'll get hot again...don't doubt that!
Gina

Mark-
Great read..and thanks for taking the time to give us a little peek inside the mind of a big leaguer.

I find it comforting that you are critical of your own play. There is nothing more frustrating than a player that seems complacent and not willing to continue to improve their game.

We appreciate your efforts and keep it up.

www.ivyenvy.wordpress.com

Mr. DeRosa,
Are you kidding me? There's no reason for you to be so hard on yourself! You're an EXTREMELY talented and versatile infielder that's only done good for the Cubs this year! Just imagine where the Cubs would be without you! Just remember - every player has rough times in their seasons... It's gonna get better! Just hang in there.
I absolutely LOVE watching the Cubs this season! I JUST got hooked on the Cubs last season (I'm not that old as it is) and you've always been, in my opinion, one of the most professional, consistant, and talented players on the Cubs. Of course, this season, it's been everyone who's been able to contribute, and that's what makes this season so special. Can't wait!
-- Kim

Mark,
Don't be so hard on yourself, you're a great asset to this team. Road games are always harder than home games. I think you've been playing extremely well and that game winning home run was amazing. I love watching you and this team play; you're all truly a joy to watch and this has been a special season so far. Thanks for all your effort and hard work and don't worry about the swing, it'll come around. Hope your hand is okay and good luck on the rest of the road trip!
Kerry

PS. Can we expect you to be sporting the knee high socks at the throwback game against the Braves? I think it would be great if the whole team did it.

Sure am glad to see that your hand/finger isn't going to be an issue. My husband and I both cringed on the repeated closeups. You guys are doing great this year. I'm hoping more games will be picked up and televised. We made it up from Indy to Wrigley for two games and both were wins. We did, unfortunately, catch Tony Romo singing Take Me Out to the Ballgame. HA! Is there anyone you'd like to hear?
Keep up the great work!!

Ironically, you are a major-leaguer focusing on doing your best and executing fundamentals to help the team while four-out-of-five guys on our Little League team behave as if they cannot focus on playing their best until their contract is re-negotiated...or something...

You get a soda and TWO bags of Skittles after every game, Mark!

Mark, don't get too discouraged. Every time you come up to the plate you make a pitcher nervous. You're a player who makes things happen and I, among countless others I am sure, are grateful to have you as a Cub. You hit that 2-run homer in the big comeback game of the year (so far...) on May 30th, and that was so huge. You and your teammates always believe you have a chance to win the game and that's more than I've seen from the Boys in Blue in quite some time. I'm so happy for you that your hand wasn't mangled and I bet you are too, ha, ha! This road trip will be a good one, already 1-0 and I think that's just what you guys need to believe in yourselves on the road. I'm sooooo enjoying this ride. If I can't watch a game, I'm listening to Ron and Pat with my trusty sports transistor radio. I'll be in third row behind home plate for a game over the summer and can't wait to see you spank the ball close up. Keep up the good work road warrior! Cubs forever!

I would have to agree with pretty much everyone in saying that its easy to get stressed out about not having a hot bat; you're a great all around ball player Mark and we would love ya even if you were hitting .188. As you know, the Cubs fans are the most loyal around. So don't sweat the small stuff, you're bound to start hitting again. Like you said everyone is contributing so you know that even though you're in a rough patch, someone has your back.

Life as a Cubs fan and as one of the time is at an all time high and I couldn't be any more tickled for you guys. I love watching you guys celebrate after the game and singing the song, it honestly swells my heart with pride. There's nothing better in this world than being a Cubs fan.

Alright, now for my plug....For anyone interested, I have a Cubs group. Here's the link:
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/Diehard_Chicago_Cubs_Fans/

Dude, what fans are you talking about???? I don't know anybody who doesn't think you've already made a HUGE impact this season. So you've left a few guys on base a few times, big deal. So has Fukudome, so has The Riot, D-Lee, Soriano and Soto. The point is there's always somebody to pick up the team when another guy is having an off day. That's what's so great about this team, it's playing like a TEAM! Don't overthink the situation, there will be plenty of opportunities to make big plays this season. If not this at-bat or this inning, then the next. I have no fears when you come to the plate with guys on base, I KNOW you can get the ball in play. And so do your team mates and your managers. With all the hot guys on our bench you wouldn't be in every game if you couldn't make things happen. So chill out, just have fun, and big things will happen. And the next time you make a big clutch hit, I'll been on this blog telling you "I TOLD YOU SO!".

Boy, do you sound down! Please don't be. You are a great player and every one struggles at some point. We all know that you are trying to do your best all the time. It would be different if we could tell you didn't care, but that is far from the case. You show you care more than a lot of players and that is what we all love about you. You literally made my day Friday when I saw the home run to win the game. It had been a horrible day at work and then to see what you and the rest of the guys did made it all seem trivial. Keep it up. Good luck on the rest of the road trip and I will be staying up and losing sleep to watch you on the computer and the TV.

Rebel

Mark -
Thanks for the great blogs. I love getting an inside look at how a professional like yourself approaches the game. I especially like reading about the team chemistry - it gives me hope that this season can continue as it started!

On a side note, I saw you at the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer on Saturday, May 31st. I had just crossed the line after walking 26.2 miles and it was a treat to see you (and Dempster) there cheering on the Cubs' wives team. Thanks for your support for all the walkers!

Keep up the great play out on the field -
Ellen

That Friday game against the Rockies was unreal. Damn Comcast for going out! I think I jumped up and down for the rest of the evening after that game. This is seriously the most exciting season I can remember.

On-day, off-day. One of the best things about this team is the hustle; you may have some down days, but I don't think anyone could ever complain that you go out there and sit on your heels. You also seem to be a real team leader in the clubhouse. Fans really appreciate all of that!

Can't wait for the throwback game on 6/12. Old-timey! Wear those socks up!

You give so much to this team. You are by far the best 8th hitter in the majors. Hitting .300 and you bat 8th is quite remarkable. Most MLB teams would have you in the 3rd or 4th whole. That also explains one of the many amazing things about this team this year. Even the backup players are batting very well. It's great to see how much depth this team has. It's good that you criticize your game so much but after reading this post it really doesn't look like you've won 8 in a row; it sounds like you just came back from a 5 games losing streak. Keep coming to the ballpark with an optimistic mind and good things will happen.

I really wish I could sit down with you or Ron Santo and talk baseball.

Keep it up we all are behind you.

MArk,
I think you are an amazing player also my favorite player. . . dont worry bout anything anyone says bout your batting, defence, or strikeouts. It will all come back everyone has their down moments. . .I feel that you will get hot soon keep up your positive attitude>>>

peace

Hey Mark,
You're awesome and have a lot to offer the Cubs! This year has been amazing and we are seeing great things from you all. The closeness of the team is apparent in every game! Keep up the hard work, you'll come out of this on top! Lot's of love and support from your Utah fans!

Hi Mark,
I like your patience at the plate this year; you're definitely more confident at the plate this year.

I think you have a bit of loop in your swing. I think if you try to swing a bit more level, you'll turn some of the flyouts into line drives to drive in some runs at key at-bats.

Keep up the great work. Wow! What a difference from last year with the patience at the plate as guys foul off the tough pitches to get their pitch to swing at.

Best regards,
Steve

Mark,
You are a fantastic baseball player and whenever I see you it puts a smile on my face! Keep up the good work and continue to have an awesome season!

Marky DeRo,

I BELIEVE in you and our cubbies. I love watching and I think that you play a MAJOR role in the line up. I have to saw your sucess opens many eyes all the time.

Marky DeRo,
Len and Bob were talking about you and they were saying
that you spend alot of time in the video room watching the way you play and swing etc. that shows detication and love for the game of baseball. It shows what kind of a player and person you are.

Good Luck!!

Hey DeRo,

I think you are doing amazing this year. Your offense and your defense have gotten better. I always believe you are doing well. Everyday after a game when i go to school i always have something good to say about what you did during the game.

Good Luck and Have Fun. - Stephanie =]

P.S. i hope you got my letter in mail while you were home. I'm the highschooler. ha good luck through the season

Hi Mark,
My sister and I always try to decide who our favorite Cub player is. We have both agreed it is definitely you! You are an all around great ball player. Thanks for all the great plays!

The only thing that matters is that the team is winning, whatever is going on in that locker room needs to stay the same. Keep up the hard work and keep this team going on it's winning ways.

The only thing that matters is that the team is winning, whatever is going on in that locker room needs to stay the same. Keep up the hard work and keep this team going on it's winning ways.

Mark, you're an amazing ballplayer! And part of what makes you amazing is you're human. Humans don't always perform at 100%. Now follow me backwards on this: if you always performed at 100%, you wouldn't be human. If you weren't human, you wouldn't be amazing. And if you weren't amazing, you wouldn't be who you are and the greatest team in the history of baseball wouldn't be doing as good as they are this year. It's been 100 years, Mark. You know what you need to do. You're knowledge of the game, combined with your ability to play it are what's making it happen every game, time and again this season. You still got all my undying support! All my best! Sam in Logansport, IN.

Mark, I've been trying to pay special attention to the way you approach the game lately, and how you execute your game. You remind me of that one guy in little league who's just naturally good at everything, makes every play look easy, and if it's a tough play he makes it look good. And to top it off... that guy always turned out to be a great guy. You are that awesome kid grown into an awesome major leaguer. As you said in your blog, your defense is just a tad off, but you're worrying too much about it. We can see it in your game. You're beating yourself up about it, and you shouldn't. Let it roll off, and play some ball. Have fun with that field--make the field work for you. You can field em like the best of them. There is no question that the way you move and hussle out on that field is thrilling for the cubs, the game, and the fans... so relax. Enjoy the game.. PLAY baseball. You guys are going to have an amazing road trip. You'll see.

Mark, you're one of our most versatile players. The team is doing so well, and it's so much fun to watch and to go to Wrigley for the games. I'm enjoying your blog also! Thanks for opening up the communication with the fans. We're with you all the way! Go Cubs!!!!

You rock Mark, nice game yesterday!!!! i love this blog!!!!

Go Cubs

yo man, its a.j. do you really read all of these things? left you a post yesterday on some other one of your past blogs, don't know if you saw it, i was just checking out the web site and so your little deal here, no idea how it works, but thought i would throw it out there. just wanted to say whats up to my old roomie. heard from any of the boys, trippy, rusty, ??? i talk to lombard quite a bit, and nelson once in a blue moon, back in the bigs, unreal. gotta love it. say whats up to marquis for me. glad you guys are still representing. say hello to heidi, been a while, my sister in law lives up there, just bought a place and got engaged. will be up this summer sometime to check it out, you'll have to meet my two boys, 2 and 2 months. get in touch with me if you get time. (2398257952) later.

Hey Mark,
I bet you were frustrated after Sunday, but remember that you had the game-winning homer on Friday. Each day isn't the same so you have to give your best effort each and every time, and I know you do that. I also know that you know what you need to do with two strikes to avoid those strikeouts. The good news is is that even on those days when you may not have your best, someone else on the team is picking it up. That's why you have a team, a team that's won 8-in-a-row! Keep up the good work. Great things are happening!

~Mark~
Great job with the home run in the sixth inning on 6/3!! Your Utah fans cheered you from in front of the computer!! Congrats to Soto, too!! We love you guys!!

Congrats on your homer tonight Mark! Just got home from work, watch'n the game and reading here! GO CUBS GO!!!!!

*Mark*
Don't be hard on yourself. I've been a Cubs fan for almost 20 years now (it'll be 20 years officially Monday) and having watched the Cubs every year I know that everyone has games where things don't go the way you wanted. You're the type of player every fan wants on their team because of your versatillity and we Cubs fan we'll cheer you on no matter what, just keep your spirits up and you will be just fine.

Good game tonight! And that sure was a sweet home run you hit! You and the rest of the guys keep up the awesome work.

That's my boy mark!!

2-R HOMER!!!

I was def happy to look at my dad and say, "That's my boy!"

You have "my boy" (or this season it's 'my boys') status this season with me. You and the Riot. WOo HOo! Go CUBS!

~Mark and all the amazing Cubbies~ 6/3
Congratulations on your win tonight!! All those home runs really excited us here in Utah! Keep the faith, we are all rooting for you guys!
Your ever faithful fans,
Milli, Mist and Destiny

Just so you know, no matter how many strike outs you have or how you're playing defense, I will always be proud to wear one of my many DeRosa shirts :) I met you very briefly at spring training practice in Mesa, and the only thing I could tell you was that you're my favorite Cub & I meant it! :) You rock! As for your home runs on Friday & tonight, AMAZING!

You are playing amazing. Can't wait to see you when you play the Rays. I'm from Chicago but live in Orlando Florida I can't ask from anymore from you.

my boss who is a Braves fan has nothing good to say about you or your team, but you're the under-rated guy that can play about every position and pull through. Had some rough at bats but you have to stop getting all excited and take it slow. Take some pitches it'll be good for you. I think it'll pay off.

Dear Mark,

You dont know how inspirational you are to the city of chicago and the team itself. Your are our leader; our leader of (cliche) Cubs nation. We love you and keep up the hard work and possitive attitude. Persistance and determination will pay off.

P.S. you look like a better looking version of Adam Sandler. Maybe your nick name should be the "Sandman" ALSO go to the darkhorse bar on tuesdays, they have the best 10 cent wings in w-ville

Sure loved seeing that smile in the dugout last night for very obvious reasons! .299 is certainly contributing in my book and a two run homer no longer qualifies for the "I suck at life" rhetoric. Way to go!

Mark, you're batting nearly .300 and all of your HRs are not only timely but inspirational for the rest of the team. You're a starter for the best team in baseball and even if you personally have a bad game, you are more than willing to go out and do interviews and talk to the media and fans.

You have no fear. Remember who you are: the glue between #1 and #25. You hold them all together.

Hey, Mark -- congratulations to you and your teammates on this NINE GAME winning streak and THE BEST RECORD IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL. Your two-run dinger last night against the Padres was very impressive. If you can go deep at Petco, you can do it anywhere. Keep working hard -- all of Cubs Nation is behind you.

Mark,
Obviously, after reading the last 59 responses, you know how the CubNation feels about you! It is a thrill to watch you play ball. I have my son watch so he can learn proper baseball techniques as well as sportsmanship. I wish I could have him watch everyone for those attributes, but millions of dollars change some people! One thing I have always said I would tell you, if ever given the chance, would be to lay off the 3-2 count. 90% of the time it is a slider that gets you. Keep being you!! Go Cubs Go!!!

Mark,

I just want you to know that you are doing AMAZING on the field. I love watching you play and you're my favorite player. It doesn't hurt that you're gorgeous too =] Congrats on the homerun last night. I woke up my mom because I was cheering so loud. Haha. Keep doing what you're doing along with the rest of the team and this will be an awesome season. I'll be seeing you next month and I can't wait! You rock and don't ever forget it.

I don't think any of us cubs fans can complain right now with the way the season is going. And hopefully it continues this way. On top of that I don't think anyone questions how hard you and the rest of the guys are working to improve on an already excellent offensive and defensive team.

Keep up the great work!

I have been a devoted/hurt/crushed/awed/pleased fan of the Cubs for 60 plus years. My first game was at Wrigley in June 1947. All my Family were Cub Fans. I would like to say that I have never witnessed a year like this one. I felt it during the Winter months and coming into Spring Training that something was totally different than past years. All of a sudden we had players/team mates working to help each other. We have Stars but actually no one on this team is a star. They are all playing like every moment, every pitch, every play has meaning to the final outcome and that is not the Cubs of the past. There have always been good things and bad things but this TEAM IS AWESOME. We, as fans, analyze everything you players do on a day to day basis but most of us have realized that doing this is the old Cubs and not the now Cubs. Lou and the fantastic group of 25 plus players are performing the finest level as a group I have ever witnessed. Fukudome brought something to the game that has been missing since Sandberg, Banks, Williams, etc. but the entire team has decided to pick each other up at that level every game - win or lose. I commend you for doing all you do for our team. Let Derrick know he needs to relax and all will come back as it already has started with you and ARam. What a team guys - keep it up for yourselves. We are loving every minute of this and know better is still on the horizon. Michael Hansen

Dude, 2 homers in 5 games, a higher OBP than both D. Lee and Soriano. You get your bad days brotha, but you fans are behind you. Keep pushing forward, keep on rockin'!!!!

We love you DeRo!!!!!!!!!

You play the game the correct way young man. Remember that even when you are not hitting, defense and hustle can win games.
You have the correct attitude and respect the game.
As a fan that's all I ask for.

dero or as i know you Al Bagnoli boy. how are your 3885 passing yards doing brother. i still cant forget your 48 pass atempts against William and Mary 10-14-95, good times

Hey DeRo!

Love the blog! Hope you will continue to write and keep all of us fans up-to-date on what's going on in the clubhouse.

The team is looking great this season. Don't beat yourself up about leaving runners in scoring position. The joy of being on a team is that you don't have to be the hero every day.

Keep up the great work on (and off) the field! We're so proud to be Cub fans!

You don't have to make any excuses. You've been a key player for us. Cub fans KNOW when a player is playing his heart out for the team. Don't dwell on a missed RBI chance because we don't. When I see you up to bat I'm not thinking about your last strike out, I'm thinking to myself and wondering what rabbit out of the hat trick you're going to pull off this time. I'm not alone.

the cubs are doing great, I just love the cubs my kids are 10 and 8 and I am turning them into little cubbies fans, you all are doing great keep up the good work, , go cubs go, us cubs fans are so proud of what you have done this yr keep up the good work and don't cut yourself down we all have good day and bad days, the cubs are in first place

Mark,
How great to find this blog and actually hear your thoughts. I have been a cub fan since I can remember and have taken great interest in your game since you joined the team. You are a ball player who leaves it all on the field and will do what you can do to help the team win. Like most everything in life when we just trust ourselves and let our natural talents and abilities take over it is amazing how things work out. Your game is vital to the team and you have the talent and ability to contribute at the highest level. We all know pushing is usually not the most direct way to improve our performance but sometimes going backwards to a thought process that worked before cures what ails. Cant wait to see you guys in action tonight and thanks for bringing the dreams of Cubs fans closer than I can remember.

Oh come on Derosa, most of us don't care how guys are doing individually as long as you guys are playing good as a team, and you guys are. I think you put way too much pressure on yourself and worry too much about what the fans will think. I don't know why i personally think it would be hard for the majority of the fans to hate you because u have a lot of charisma especially with the ladies my two sisters both say you're their favorite player-I have no idea why LOL. Well anyway, every player has ups and downs and i believe you'll start seeing the ball the size of a beach ball soon just wait and see. Fans that boo are just really drunk.

Tonight was an upset in our winning streak, but I have no doubt that you will do great things in LA! Also, Mark, thank you for the blogs. As a huge fan I look forward to reading every new entry and gaining just a little more understanding of what makes my favorite team tick! Keep up the great work, guys. We'll be rooting for you tomorrow here in Utah!!

Regarding the last post with Riot, if he's thunder then he's outside my window right now. (I'm not complaining =])

Hopefully, Mark will soon follow.

Although we lost last night at least it wasn't a landslide loss, we were in it to the very end because Ted pitched a phenomenal game like always. Our starting pitching this season has been a wonderful surprise and a delight to watch, especially Dempster's transition back to the starting rotation. I know there is only more wonderful moments on the horizon. Alright, our streak was broken, but it was a wonderful ride and it gives us a chance to start another. So let's gear up for tonight's game against the dodgers, ready your copy of Go Cubs Go and watch our boys in blue get another brilliant victory. Oh, for those that don't have a copy of the song Go Cubs Go, you can email me at Lassy_1972@yahoo.com and I will gladly send you a copy of the MP3 and the lyrics. Oh and Mark, congrats on the homer hun, I knew you could do it, never lose faith!!!

Mark,
So I was grocery shopping the other day, and I came across a guy wearing a #17 Mike Fontenot jersey. Now normally I wouldnt think twice about it but then I remembered that I live in Orlando, FL. So I thought Mike would like to know he has fans in Florida. Anyway, keep up the awesome work and before you know it, youll be playing catcher since youve played everywhere esle (which is a good thing!!!)
P.S. Ill be in Tampa when you guys come down in a couple weeks, Ill be the only guy in the stands yelling "I love Mark DeRosa!!!"

Mark,
I know you may feel disappointed on some days. All you can do is keep giving it 100% every game and I know you do!
Remember there isn't an I in the word TEAM and you guys are definitely putting on a winning show this season.
Always believing in Cubby blue!
Cindy

Hi Mark,
Original Chicago born Cubs fan here, now transplanted in L.A. Such a pleasure to root root for the Cubbies, you guys are fantastic. Keep up the good work and keep on grindin, it is bound to happen in '08. And I will pull a 187 on that darn goat for you guys. We will be in Dodger Stadium all weekend cheering you on. Best of Luck.

Jeff Angeli

Just wanted to say you've been doing great the past few games! Keep up the great work DeRo!
This has been such an uplifting season for Cubs fans. I've been through a lot of mockery and humiliation the past few years, as my boyfriend and his friends are Sox fans. I've even actually been BOOED at the Sox el stop from everyone when I went to one of their games in the early '06 season. After enduring their crap for years, I'm so happy they can eat their words. haha (I seriously can't wait for the Crosstown games).
Don't want to speak too soon, but I know big things are going to happen in '08!
GO CUBBIES!

~Mark and the Awesome Cubbies~ 6/5
Hey guys, can't wait for another blog. Just watched the game on tv and have to say it was definitely an edge of the seat game! Great job on the home runs and I'm glad Wood was able to close it down! Good luck tomorrow! Love your adoring Utah fans!!

Mark,

It was awesome to see you play against Cincinnati. I hope you enjoyed the picture that Wood gave to you. Remember the baseball trip to Europe in High School. When you come back to Cincinnati give me a call so that we can catch up. My wife and would love to have you eat at our house, which is only five minutes from the stadium. Batting 300, great.

Mark,
You did a very good job last night. You are an inspiration to me . For my softball number, I chose number 7. I am 11 yrs old and my dream is to meet you and go to the famous Wriggly Field. I hope we win tonight's game. That would be the greatest thing ever. GO CUBS GO!!

Katie R.

Mark,
Nice hit yesterday...good luck tonight and lets finish this road trip on a solid note. Looking forward to your next interview.

Mark,
It is so awesome to watch you play as a pro. Everytime I turn on the game I still can't believe I'm watching my old neighbor!
I remember playing wiffle ball and stick ball with you and also watching you dominate Little League.
I've since moved from Carlstadt to Chicago. We have been to a few games and plan to go see more to watch you play.

Bellapianta

Mark, I was born and raised a Cubs fan on the Southside of Chicago. Now, can you imagine what I've been going through all my life with these Sox fans? I'm happy to say I'm giving them back what I've been taking all these years and want to say THANK YOU for the chance to do that!! You're a big part of this team and we couldn't do it without you!! My dad passed away six years ago and he's the reason I'm a big fan. I'm one of four girls (poor man didn't get any sons) and I'm the only one that took an interest in baseball. Back in my day every Friday was Ladies day at Wrigley and my dad would take me, a friend, and my mom to the game. I was hooked and can't get enough of my Cubbies!! Now I go with my husband and daughter (but I'm very disappointed because she shows no interest in baseball, a child of mine and no interest, UUGGHHH, but she does go to the games) every year. We try to go to a game a month and this year has been so much fun. Last year we were at the last home game and it was amazing!! So don't worry about making mistakes, hey, we're all human and if we didn't make mistakes, how could we learn from them? You're an amazing player, never get down on yourself!!!! We'll be at the game on Wednesday, June 11th. I'll wave, hahahaha. Love all you guys . Jackie Millay - #1 Fan (I even tried out for the 7th Inning competition last year) Go CUBBIES!!!!!

~Hey guys!~ 6/7
Last night's game was bad, we lost our moral on some bad calls and couldn't get it back up. Today, we will do better! I have faith and good luck!
~Milli~

DeRo, you're clearly my Hero.

Everyday you come to the field ready to play, ready to contribute, and always ready to do what the team needs. If that's not a team player, I don't know what it is. You have one of the best attitudes in the game.

I do have a favor, come play for our softball team. We need it, badly.

I tell you what, I'll sign you to a 1 year deal for $30, a pack of gum, and dinner on me. How's that sound?

Keep up the good work!

~ Tim

i am just now catching up on some "old" business but what the heck were you thinking about when you decided to slide into first base a "few" games ago...not only can you seriously hurt yourself but you actually slow yourself down...the "physics" of it just do not work...soooo, please do not do something that could take you out of the line-up...as someone who had the fundamentals of the game drilled into me from little league through high school, i appreciate you and all the others on the team that play fundamentally sound baseball!!!

Hey guys...I know I'm probably getting irritating now, but I just wanted to say that you guys still rock! We've been struggling against the Dodgers, but I have every faith that tomorrow will go well. Keep the team locked together, once that falls apart we lose a lot as the Cubs are based on a strong bond between teammates. Keep your heads up, you all play hard and play well. We got some crappy calls again today, but we will conquer this road thing. Take care and relax, tomorrow come out swinging with a bang!! We love you here in Utah!!

Mark,

Two quick observations:

1) I've seen you look to go to RF more often and that has resulted in some very hard-hit balls. Maybe teams will start coming inner-half to you again... but until then, great adjustment! You seem to find the alley (and the bleachers) when you can get your arms extended going the opposite way.

2) Every team will have its ups and downs over the course of a 162 games season. I think all fans know that... which is why I hope what has happened in the last four games will not become a regular occurrence because it's something Cubs fans have seen for years. This is what I'm getting at: In the last four games, the Cubs have been more aggressive at the plate, taking only seven walks compared to striking out 37 times. That's about a 1-to-5 ratio... which clearly isn't how the team helped build such a successful start. I've seen more patient ABs by the Cubs in the first two months than in most seasons. I just hope the team will revert back to that approach.

One more thing --- I love the name of the blog, but wonder if you ever considered "Quaker Raker." That's still one of the best mascot names in all of college sports.

Keep up the great work!

Hey Mark, I think it's awesome seeing you play in the major leagues considering I saw you play as young kid in the Carlstadt Little League. Keep playing hard as you always did and focus on playing and not what people think.

Another Mark from your former home town- mtb701@aol.com

Lots of Cubbie fans in the fan forum of the Cubs site are wanting to see Cedeno play second over you. I don't agree with them. I like Ronnie, but as a utility. I don't think he'll be quite as consistent over the course of a season as you are. Players go cold, get hot... I think you're doing great. I will say, it appears from my point-of-view that you are swinging like you have ARam power sometimes. Last year, looked like you took more pitches to right and had some shorter swings.

I love your passion and I am greatful that you're a Cubbie.

Hey Mark, don't worry about the k's. Everyone struggles. However, I hope this will help: I have had you on my fantasy team as a starting second baseman since day one, and am happy to report you've kept my team in the running. I know you'll get out of this slump soon, and we'll go on another 10 game winning streak soon. Go Cubbies and good luck!

Hey Mark,

You should know better than anyone that everyone goes through hot and cold streaks (ask Geo about his little 8 k streak earlier this season), but you have been awesome for us this year. You are my second baseman on my fantasy team, and you've been great for both me and the Cubs this season. Can't wait to see you guys play at Wrigley, and I have total confidence that you'll help us get that elusive World Series title this season.

Go Cubbies!!

Steve

Hey Mark,
I really enjoy this blog dude. But I enjoy you on the field even more. After reading the stuff you write on this blog and comments you've made to the sportscasters, I think I can understand your feelings pretty well about how you view and play baseball. That said, I think sometimes you come down too hard on yourself. You are only human you know.

I am a 54 year old, die-hard, Cubs fan. I could say many, many great and wonderful things about you and the others on this team for sure but I'd run out of room. But I want to say this much; you being the ballplayer you are and the Cubs utility man on this team should make you proud. How many guys in the pros can say they can play so many positions as well as you? That's an accomplishment not many can claim.

That said, I gotta tell ya, I recently thought about which one of you guys on this team this year I would pick as my Cubs hero for 2008. I thought hard about that question. At first I thought it would be easy but then I started to realize that I could easily pick any one of you. This team is playing great but better than that, this team seems to be a cohesive unit. Each one of you picks up each other when anyone has a bad day. Sometimes, though, the team has a bad day too. I get as frustrated as anyone else, including you, when the team looses a game, especially one that you should have won or had the lead in until the very end and then got beat. But you guys are only human and no team can win them all.

I also have a theory as to why the "Cubs" have not won a World Series in a hundred years. I believe it has to do with the fans. What I mean is that the fans have pretty much always been extremely loyal to the Cubs all these years and that as each year passes without a series win, the players feel a greater sense of duty, and therefore pressure, to win it all. I've heard it come out in comments many times from you guys before. "Oh the fans deserve a World Series win." "We can't let down these fans." "Cubs fans are the best fans in baseball and we have to win it for them." Those might not be exact quotes, but they are pretty close.

So what do you think Mark? Could I be correct? I think if you guys could go out and try to forget about how much the fans deserve a win, it might take some of the pressure off you guys and make it easier to win.

Good luck in 2008. I'll be rooting for you guys to the end, win or loose.

Gary T.

GOODNESS LORD!!!! (Watching the game here on Sunday) Do you know how much rock?
...
No, Seriously!!
...
Do you know how much you rock?

DUDE! YOU TOTALLY ROCK!!!!

WE LOVE YOU MARK!!!!

Tell Zambrano he is cute! From a fan.

Excellent game tonight, Mark. Your homer in the 1st inning was awesome! And batting 2nd in the line up. So are you going to give Theriot a run for his money. Keep it up!

Rebel

~Hey guys!~
Great game on Sunday! You all played so well and really brought the win in! Great job on your home run in the first inning, Mark! You have had a great road trip and I know that you will continue playing well. I think you do bat better higher in the line-up, however, Theriot does get to first base quite a lot, if you were right after him then we would have a good shot at some two run homers or just even advancing him to third with Lee following! Now that would be some good stuff. :) I also wanted to show some love to Wood, he is an amazing closing pitcher. I mean how many pitchers load the bases giving the opposing team hope for that last run in the ninth and then close them down? Not many, that's for sure. Then we have Marmol who is incredible in that eighth inning and many great opening pitchers. I have to agree with Gary T.'s comment. It's so hard to chose a favorite Cub this year because everyone is playing so well, even the relief players are giving it their all and as long as you guys are out there showing the world that you are a unit, I think this year will continue to be amazing for you all! Looking forward to the game tomorrow against the Braves and seeing Theriot back at SS. Keep the faith and continue improving through the months, amazing things are definitely happening for the Cubs and their fans in 2008! ~Milli~

How many different positions do you play, again? I think I have seen you play every position except pitcher... so I don't think that you should worry about your defense. You are bound to make mistakes when you play so many different positions. Your offense clearly makes up for any mistakes that you have made. I think the most encouraging thing for me is that I have been a Cub fan for 33 years, the entire span of my life, and I have never seen a team this good. Thank you,

Matt

What the fans are saying. What the FANS are saying. Mark, what the true blue Cubs fans are saying as that this team has filled us with magic. Filled us with hope. Never have we felt this so early in the year. Cubs fans love this team and what they are doing. I'm not talking about those pompous arses who call in to the talk radio and pontificate about everything the team is doing wrong. I'm referring to the fans who have loved you since we were in diapers. We KNOW you are playing with your hearts and souls. We KNOW you are doing everything in your ability
