Bringing Dad on the road
The L.A. trip for me was a great trip. It was the first time in my eight years in the big leagues that my mom and dad came on the road. I talked to my dad early this year, and said, Hey, I plan on playing a couple more years, but I'd like you to make at least one road trip with me. He always comes to Philly and Shea and, obviously, comes to Chicago. He picked the West Coast and we took the whole family out there. We did a bunch of stuff and he enjoyed it. I took him to Dodger Stadium and he came on the field for batting practice. He always felt he was imposing and never wanted to come to the field with me. He finally relaxed and allowed me to show him what it was about on a day-to-day basis, and he got a real kick out of it.
My dad's always been my biggest supporter, my biggest fan. You don't want him to come and spend a week with you on the road and you go 1-for-15. It makes everybody miserable. I'll be honest with you, when I'm scuffling, my dinner tastes terrible, your hair doesn't sit right, you don't know whether to shave or not shave, your clothes are tattered. That's just the way it is. When you're going good, you feel like a million bucks. With him on the road, I wanted him to be able to relax and have fun, and I was able to play well and get a few hits and drive a few balls out of the park, and it really relaxed him to enjoy himself, so that was nice for me.
L.A.'s always fun. Vince Vaughn was sitting in the front row of the game on Sunday. Every guy on our team was trying to make eye contact with him. I had a chance to have dinner with a bunch of guys on the team and our wives, and sitting next to us at dinner was Jennifer Aniston and Drew Barrymore and John Mayer. That stuff -- we become starstruck in a hurry. For me and my wife, you're trying to take pictures with your phone under the table because no one's going to believe you.

Great game against the Braves tonight. Going back tomorrow for Old Timey day. Best two afternoons away from work ever...!

What a great post! It is always good to see superstars (and you are a superstar!) have their priorities in line. Family is first and foremost the most important thing and it is nice that you could bring your dad on the roadtrip west.
Keep up the great work! It is not going unnoticed. We love you here in Chicago. You are not only a world class athlete but a world class individual.
I am waiting impatiently for Old Timey day tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed for high socks as all baseball players should wear them!
Thanks again and Go Cubs!

Ha! Try not to forget they just "pretend" for a living. You guys are the real deal. I'd take an hour with a Cubby over a week with Vaughn.

It's nice to hear that you and your father got to spend some quality time together and that it turned out to be a successful road trip. Was great to see you relax at the plate and get home runs. I knew you were stressing, you just gotta let it come naturally too many of the guys are forever swinging for the fences and then they end up striking out. If they just hung back and relax like you have they would get more clutch hits. Anyway, I hope you plan on playing more than just a couple more years, I for one would hate to see you retire so soon, you have such youthful exuberance out on the field and watching you guys celebrate is so magical to us fans. So PLEASE reconsider!!!?
Great to have you guys back home, and I'm sure you're glad to be back too. The first two games have been real gems to watch. As a matter of fact my daughter Kate got to go up with her grandparents and see Tuesday's game, it was her first game period... I'm going to have her post about her experience because when she came home she was just going on and on about it, was really sweet.
Well good luck on the game tonight Mark.

Hi! This is Katie R. I left a comment on another page if you read it you would remember me. I said that my wish was to meet you and to go to Wrigley Field. I got my wish on June 10. I had a lot of fun. My grandparents bought me a cubs monkey and I named him Ernie Banks. And the only thing I could think of was talking to one of the cubs players. It was the greatest day of my life. The moment I sat in the chair I felt like I was going to cry. I have never been that excited for anything in my life. I was so happy that I got to go to my first Cubs game. And it won too. How cool is that? First of all, I have got to say that Wrigley Field is a beautiful stadium. The first thing I did was sit anxiously in my seat waiting for the cubs to come out and practice. I got to see Ted Lily stretch on the field and practice pitching. He did a good job pitching at the game. All of you did a good job that night and I would have to thank all of you cubs players. Thank you for making my dreams come true on my first game.

Hey Mark - You saw how happy you made your dad being with you on the road. What you may not see is how happy and proud your parents are when they tell the family stories of the time they get to spend with you and your family! Hope you can hear/feel us cheering from NJ!! - Pam

Hey Mark,
Living in L.A. for 20 years, I have gotten past being "star-struck" by celebrities. But, I must admit that I DID stop and take a minute or two and say "Hey! That's DeRo!!!" to my friends when I saw you out for dinner at (restaurant's name withheld). I've been a huge fan of yours from your Braves days and have seen you play in person several times. However, to see you out and about with the celebrities was a big thrill for me. I'm glad you and your family had such a great time here in L.A.!

Hey thats nice that your dad got see you play on the road and see you some homers. I was so excited when you hit a home run as I always am because you and Theriot are my favs. Hope Soriano is ok and hopefully be back ASAP. I think you all will do fine without him though. i have faith. Can't wait to see you and the rest of the team when i go to Cubs/Sox game on the 22nd.
P.s. i will have a poster saying D-Ro IS MY MAIN MAN.
Go cubbies. stuff like that. hope you play that day.

Congrats on a great road trip Mark! Watching you guys is such a treat- and getting your thoughts in this blog have been a ton of fun too (good to know that professional athletes can get star struck too!). Keep up the good work, and one of these days I'll have to get to Wrigley- til then I know Pat & Ron will keep me & my co-workers posted!

What a sweet story about your dad! I'm glad you are able to take him with you on some trips. It must mean a lot to him that you guys are so close.
Really great game last night. Of course, what happened to Soriano must have been horribly painful, and I'm sure he's not happy about being out for six weeks. But Dempster was phenomenal, I'll bet striking out Chipper Jones felt GREAT! You are all playing so well as a team -- very tight, very together, and you still look like you're having fun. I especially loved the little smile from Theriot to his fellow cajun after driving him in to score (Happy Belated Birthday Mike Fontenot!), keep it up!

Mark,
Just a couple of weeks ago, during the Cub's homestand against the Rockies, I made my first trip ever to Wrigley. Like a lot of fans now, my father got me excited about the Cubs at a young age. I remember him coming home and us watching the games. My dad passed away not too long ago and while at Wrigley, all I could do is think of how awe-struck he would be with this year's team. He never got a chance to go to Wrigley. It's good to see that you spend time with your dad and family, despite being busy with road games and all. Good luck the rest of the season!

I love this blog and I love the Cubs. They keep finding ways to come back and win. I loved reading about your family and you being star struck- even though you are a celebrity you don't act like it which is way cool. Keep up the great play and hope Soriano comes back sooner rather than later. You guys can win for him though while he is out. Good luck against the AL, especially the White Sox- lets hope the Cubs sweep both series! How awesome would that be!!! Take care and keep it up.

Mark, Thanks for being a regular guy and writing these posts. It is good to see your family go on a road trip. This team is as good as the 98 Yankees or 2001 Mariners. It is a long season, and as long as the Cubs keep that attitude up (Cubby Swagger), you have a good chance in Oct. We enjoy watching all the games we can get on Direct TV. Lorraine and Gary

Just want to say this is the first Cubs team that I have watched that even if you are down going into the late innings that I cant stop watching because you always seem to have a way to come back and win. Its great to know about the family support because they always play a big role it your motiovation. Mine supported and support me while I've been in Iraq. I would love to see this be the year for the team. I'll be watching from Iraq though. Keep up the great work. It helps keep me going. You guys are world famous.

Mark,
This is my second post, something I don't usually do but reading your posts have been fun. It's nice to see the real side of a great player. Got to see you on Thurs. and Sat. in LA and had a fantastic time. Sitting 10 rows from the field was the best ever, something I will have to do at Wrigley, if I could get a ticket. Anyway, hope you are able to celebrate father's day with your dad even though you are in Toronto. I believe this is our year! Go Cubs Go.

Mr. DeRosa,
I've been a fan of the cubs for a long time. After 25 years of watching MLB, I still learn new stuff all the time. Before the last couple years, I never really understood the benefit of having a player that could play "all three outfield positions", much less every position.
Thanks to you, I know better. In all seriousness, I think you are the MVP of this team. The options you bring to a lineup card alone warrant the nomination, not to mention you hit over .300 with power.
Thanks for being a Team Player, thanks for being a Good Person, thanks for being a unselfish athlete, and thanks for being a Chicago Cub (hopefully for a long time to come).

Tough loss tonight. The rally was just a bit short. I thought your beard looked great. Are you planning on keeping it or just trying something new? And Theriot had the #3 web gem on ESPN tonight. It was a great catch to go along with the other 2 he had tonight. You guys will get them tomorrow.

Tough loss again tonight for us. Great job with the homerun, Soto!! I think one thing that is hurting us is having our batting line-up change and our outfield. Though your awesome at a lot of different positions, it takes a lot out of person to go from spot to spot depending on the game. We miss Soriano and I know that we'll bring it even harder tomorrow. We have been so close to coming back in the last two games, that I feel it's going to happen for us tomorrow night. Hope that Z's shoulder is alright, we can't afford to lose him!! Get some rest and come back tomorrow with the power that we have seen you all bring in the past! Love, your fans in Utah

Hey Mark,
I am a humungous Cubs fan and you are one of my favorite players of all time. I am really into baseball and barely miss watching you and the Cubs play. I am only 13 years old and i still play baseball and I have hopes of playing in the MLB, I am confident but not self concious about it. I look up to you as a role model and one of the best second baseman that ever played for the Cubs. You remind me of myself playing baseball, you always have your head in the game, you dont get down when your in a slump and you dont get cocky. You always have that happy-go-lucky attitude. I always look forward to hearing you on the Mac, Jurco and Harry show. You seem like a very nice person and if I had to meet you I woul dbe the luckiest person in the world. When I heard you were signed by the Cubs in 2007 I was excited because I heard you were a very rare second baseman. Again you are my role model and it would be great to meet you someday. Hopefuly you are reading this because I'm meaning this. Mark you are the greatest person.
Thanks for taking your time out and reading this!
If you can email me on my email below for tips!
Thanks,
P.S. No matter what happens you will always be my favorite player!

Mark: I have been a fan of the Cubs since 1948 listening to them first on WGN RADIO or the CUBS radio network and then on TV. I have seen sone greats: Earnie Banks, Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins, RICK RUESHEL AND OTHERS. i SAW you hit those 2 home runs (one a grand slam) in game 1 and was proud of you. we can't win them all, but for a while we had the best record in baseball. Everyone has a slump, but I love the cubs. I was hit by a pickup truck on November 11, 2007 and am paraplegic. If I could I would attend the games at Wrigley Field, but I am content to sit in my wheelchair in front of the TV or computer and root for all of you. GO CUBS GO!!!!!!!!

Mark, first Kudo for the great season. Now the hard part, September looks like a make or break month. If you guys ever played super ball September is the time to do it. I only get the games on WGN because social security won't stretch to MLB. But you can be sure I will be glued to the big screen for the rest of the way. We don't get Cubs baseball up here in Coeur D'Alene on the radio, unless you are playing the Mariners. Thats the home team in the inland Northwest.
