Now introducing: "The Pulse"

Thanks for all the suggestions for a blog title. It's now "The Pulse," which is something my teammates have called me for the last two years.

Everything goes through me. My teammates know it. The fans see the superstars and all this stuff. I'm the glue, baby. I'm the guy who floats from the No. 1 man to the 25th man. I'm somewhere in the 15, 13 range. I'm the bell curve.

Good cause: On Saturday, May 17, DeRosa will take part in an equipment drive to benefit the Baseball Tomorrow Fund. He'll be at the Sports Authority at 620 N. LaSalle Street, Chicago, from 6-8 p.m. CT. Fans are encouraged to donate a piece of baseball or softball equipment, and will receive an autograph. Ryan Theriot will be at the Sports Authority at 7233 W. Dempster in Niles, and Ryan Dempster will be at the Sports Authority at 3134 N. Clark Street, Chicago, from 6-8 p.m. CT.

Congrats on the new blog name, Mark. Middle of the bell curve, though? Oh, now. I tell everybody I know that Mark DeRosa is the MVP of the Cubs, bar none.

Hey, when are we gonna see you behind the plate, or even throw an inning or two?

Keep it up, DeRo. I've seen a lot of guys come and go on the Cubs over the years, and you're one of the ones that 'gets it'. Believe me, people appreciate that.

Jason

Excellent game today, Mark!! The 2 hits were great and the homer was terrific. The catch was wonderful. Have you been taking lessons from Reed Johnson? :-) Seriously, you don't need lessons. You are a great player, and I am bringing my mom to her first 2 games Monday and Tuesday in Houston. Great work. Keep it up.

Rebel

Great game both defensively and with the bat. Keep up the great work and love the blog. Thanks
Gloria

Nice work today in the field and at the plate. You've not only been a standout for the Cubs this year (and last) but you (along with the Cubs staff) have propelled my MLB fantasy team into first place and a 6-0 start.

Hey Mark

Great game today!! My husband and I have a good feeling about this year. This is going to seem like a wierd question but do you remember from college someone by the name of Sean Turner? He is my cousin and remembers you from college (you played ball together)?

Mark, promise us if we win the Wold Series that you will write a book about your Cubbie experience thoughout the season (Even if it's a short one). I rarely read anything except news, but this blog of yours has me glued. It's like nothing I've read before. Getting the inside perspective from an actualy player is absolutely intriguing.

I love the patience you guys are showing behind the plate
this year. This is by far the best Cubs team I've seen since '84. "It's gonna happen"

Russ

Mark, great game today! I will be there tomorrow to cheer you and the rest of the team to a victory. Go Cubs!

I was at the game today. That catch resevered you a spot on Baseball tonight. The performance at the plate
was outstanding.

Mark,
The game today was fantastic! I loved your catch and your homerun. One of my favorite things about the Cubs, though, is how much you guys give back to the community. I was so proud of Dempster when he honored the families of our Service men and women to Wrigley Field on Mother's Day. He's a great guy and deserves to be having such a great start after all his hard work. I really think this is a special team this year. If you're the glue, you're the Super Glue. I know you need a day off sometimes but I'm always disappointed if you're not playing. You guys are great, you've worked hard, and you deserve success. Cub Nation is cheering for you.

Great game, Mark!!! I found your blog while I was at school and it made my day:) I got home just in time to see your amazing catch!! Keep up the good work. GO CUBS!
Lizzy

Mark, always great to hear from you and watch you give 110% out there. I also like your presence to the media and your perception on team motivation; have you considered a coaching career after your playing days? Baseball needs your leadership far into the future.

D-ro. You're not somewhere in the middle. In my opinion you're one of the top 3 on the team. You're always out there giving your all! The rumors of a Brian Roberts deal irritated me because I didn't know what the team would do with you. I think the front office and Lou realize how much of an asset you are to this club. Keep up the good work, You're a great player. I wish I had an ounce of the talent you have...can you bottle some and send it? I could use something for beer league.

Nice Blog, It is refreshing to hear straight talk, and not a bunch of overhyped crap. You definetly are the pulse of the cubs, you don't complain, you go where ever needed, and you do your best, and never give up. Nice catch into the Ivy, how about the next time you play the outfield, Do a Sammy run out to the field, that will put a charge into the bleacher bums. Go Cubs....

Mark,

I believe.

What a game, DeRo!! Again with the bat and the leather--what a stud.

That was a sick catch--but you get me worried with that stuff. Like about two weeks ago when you slid into the wall by the visitors bull pen. Did you see that replay? Do you know how close that one was? You're a gritty player that gives 100% on EVERY play--something the "super-stars" don't do and that we fans like to see. But please be careful, man...you're one of the most important players on this team.

By the way, I wish I would have known earlier that you were going to be making a public appearance tonight. How about a little more heads up in the future--I would have definitely supported the cause.

Anyways, keep up the awesome work, bro. On such a talented team, you'll be hard-pressed to get the national attention that you deserve--but the people that watch you every day know what you're all about...

Mark;Just thought Id let youu know that after being a Cub fan my whole life (61 years). And I truly beleive we finally have a team that can go all the way!!!!! If we have more players putting out the effort that you do we cant lose!!! Oh; just thought Id let you know that my Dear Old 84 year old Mother has a huge crush on you and would really be ticked off if they traded you anytime in the near future..Now she has been a fan all her life also..

Great job making Sportscenter's #4 play of the day! I bet you would have gotten #1 if it wasn't a catch that Fukadome would have made standing up..ha!

You rock, kick some Pirate booty today!

Hey Mark. I'm in Boston on biz this weekend, and caught the highlight of the catch this morning. Quick question, was that a great catch or a great recovery? LOL I couldn't tell.

I'm going to the Red Sox v. Brewers DH today. I'm putting the hex on The Crew as soon as I walk into Fenway this afternoon.

This might be a nice couple of days to grow that division lead.

Mark,

Great game today and what a catch! This team is so exciting to watch! I can only imagine what it must be like to be a part of it. I've been a die-hard since the days of Billy Buck in about '77. Wow! I was about 3-4 years old! :) Seriously though, thanks so much for the blog and everything you do as "The Pulse" of this team. Your great team-first attitude and dedication has earned you a lot of respect among us bleeding-Cubbie-Blue fans. We love you and all that you do to keep putting up those "W"!!!

You rock, babes! Keep up the great work!!
You're one of those increasingly rare players that are sooo much fun for fans to watch because you wear your heart on your sleeve--and your heart is devoted to the game.
xox

Mark, I am a forever CUBS fan but now live in CA. Got to see you in Las Vegas at the Big League Weekend. I love going there. It is like being home, so many CUBS fans. You are doing a fantastic job as well as the entire team. I am already planning my trip to Chicago in October. Went to Chicago in '03 in October and hung out at Wrigley with the others that thought that was our year but this year is so very different, I can feel it! I believe! This is the teams year and the year for all the fans who have been waiting for this for their whole life. Go D-Ro. Love the Pulse
Sandy

Keep up the good work Mark and I am glad that you found a name for your blog.

-Chris

Marky Mark. Hows it going. Keep up the good work on the blog. Hopefully you can be consistent with it, unlike some other player blogs. Though they are your divisional rivals, I'd apperciate if you would check out my blog on the Pittsburgh Pirates. It's hard to be 'rival' with a team that hasn't had a winning record in 15 years!

http://theburghblues.mlblogs.com/

are you trying to say that you're The Straw That Stirs The Drink?

i hope so.

please. we need this.

so.

badly.

Hi Mr. Mark Derosa! How are you? I really like the name of your blog. "The Pulse". So cool. So...now to baseball. Today's game I thought was very high scoring...which was strange and normal. Partly because the wind was blowing straight in part of the game, and it was also blowing out part of it. Isn't Mr. Sorriano really hitting the ball amazing? 2 home runs in 1 days! That is really awesome! So If Mr. Sorriano is reading this, I congratulate him. If you are reading this also Mr. Derosa, I think you had a great game today.
So congrats sir! I hope to see you soon!

Cubbyfanjohn

My daughter and I attended the game today. We loved your head first dive into first base. You looked safe to us. Keep the positive vibe going. Love the blog name too :)

Mark, I think you are the heart of this team i love how you are willing to sacrifice yourself for the team no matter what the situation... I think you are the most important player on this team cuz you provide the engery and hustle that every fan appreciates. This team has the making of something special something i have never seen in all my years as a die hard CUBS fan. Keep up the good work. This is the year.
Matt

Go Cubs Go!

THE PULSE...That is pretty sweet and so true!

What's up DeRo ,
We love you and the Cubbies down here in Arkansas. I take alot of heat from the Cardinal fans, but I feel like I
will have the last laugh this year.
Love the blog , are you sure the name didn't have anything to do with this springs incident ? :)
go cubs!!!
Jim

Good man on good cause actions! When I come to Wrigley in August teach this Long Island # 1 Cub fan the winning game jump! The world will learn it in October.

Hey Mark, its Bart. I dont know if you remember me from the Sports Authority signing last night, I was with my girlfriend Katie...the one that almost passed out when you took a picture with her. Thank you so much. I have never seen her that happy. It means alot to me. By the way, it was so cool that you remembered the September 17th game last year.

I got the picture of me and you and the one signed already in a frame, along with the ball. I cant wait to tell and show everyone. Thanks again, and keep getting the job done. You have no idea what you, and the Cubs mean to this city.

-Bart.

He He the Brewers are in LAST PLACE???? Is this true? Fabulous!

DeRo...

You are really my favorite Cub. You might not be a superstar but you are a straight up team player. You don't ask for the multi-million dollar contracts (though you deserve one). You play every position your absolute hardest. You are a CUB. And you guys are 10 games over .500 1/4 of the way through the season.

You are the best.

BTW... I got a few good pictures of you at bat and warming up on 5/14 against San Diego. If interested, I could get them to you.

E-mail patriotbaseballer (AT) yahoo (DOT) com

Thanks dude, you are the best,

Ryno (yeah i'm named after sandberg)

Not a Superstar? Possibly. But the Cubs would not have gotten to where they did last year, nor would they be where they are this year, without you and your amazing versatility. So don't belittle yourself, your talent, or your value to the club. All of that said, those of us with long memories (and we are legion) don't want to see the list of great players that never played in a World Series as a member of the Cubs, get ANY longer. Is This The Year? Maybe. Just maybe. And know, that if it is, YOU are a big part of the reason it is.

Aw, no "DeRo's Deliberations"?! Just kidding -- "The Pulse" is a great name. Congratulations on a historically successful homestand and best wishes against the Astros. At least you won't have to deal with Oswalt.

The pulse..good name in light of your previous problems (SVT's). I had the same ablation as you one year ago after experiencing rapid heartbeats for 30 years and haven't had one incident since. Unfotunately still have to drink Starbucks Decaf! I play softball out here in Scottsdale but we are done for the summer so I can watch my Cubs play everyday now. Great series. Great comment from the booth about how you are not only able to play so many positions but play them well and that it doesn't affect your offense either. Other guys switch positions and they get all out of sync offensively. Go Cubs and Go Mark

Mark, can you give us "the pulse" on your favorite and least favorite parks to plan in and why? Many of us have the desire to someday see all the major league parks from a fan perspective, it would be great to hear it from a player and why. Good luck in Houston!

...speaking of bell curves...

At the age of 42 I decided to - just for fun - take a 100-level course in molecular & cellular biology (intro to human physiology) with a bunch of pre-med kids half my age.

I wound up right in the middle of the bell curve with a C+ primarily due to the fact Little League baseball season and the Cubbies' string of wins coincided with the sections on the cardio-pulmonary and renal systems.

My "study time" fell by the wayside in favor of coaching youngsters, visiting Wrigley Field (way to beat those Astros & thanks for tossing my son that ball, Alfonso!) and watching the Cubs on TV.

I am a restaurant owner and consider the Cubs baseball team as my mental health vacation. I watch, listen too, or go to the games. Already have been to 8 games and looking forward to many more. I just wish the gas prices were better since its a 370 mile trip. BUT THE CUBS ARE WORTH IT. I started a World Series Savings account today!! Play smart and hard and I have faith October will be a special month for all of us Cubs Fans.

When a tag is applied and called safe, even though the runner is totally, clearly, without a doubt out. Will the umpire ever acknowledge or apologize after watching the tape later admit to you that he made a bad call?

Mark, 'The Pulse" is perfect, . . . just like you! Great game in Houston. Tell Jim that catch was SUPREME and Soto. . . . OH MY GOD!! You guys ROCK my world every second of every day! Thank you all!

DeRo, that was a great game last. Geo's homer was a sure thing to begin with, but to call it an inside the park home run must have made his day. Jim's catch was also great, but all the pictures I took were of you. I will be there again tonight and hope to see another great game. Also, if you read this, could you tell Kerry Wood thanks for the autograph? I saw him at the Galleria Mall in Houston today, and was a little flustered when I asked for his autograph. I didn't even tell him my name. He was very gracious and I hope you will thank him again for me.
Rebel from Little Rock

I believe we've reached a new low as Cubs fans. Quite a feat for a franchise that has been 'Championship-free' for 100 years. Mark DeRosa can be forgiven as he has provided some insight heretofore unseen by many. While the posts have been a bit odd, today's post confirms Mark has let these psychophantic comments get to his head. Again, he should be given a pass.

But you Cubs fans here really make me vomit. You're not the same ***hats that wear $150 jeans and wave to the camera while talking on your cell at Wrigley are you?

Idiots.

Mark,

Keep up the hard work! Love watching you and the Cubs play when I can get a game or two on TV here in Maryland. Would like to come see you play when you are in DC playing the Nationals.

GO 7!!!!

Your cousin,
Al

I kinda wish I could hear you say those things, just so I'd know you were kind of kidding. Friend.

I read that the nickname "The Pulse" came from your heart problems. I think that's awesome! I've always been a huge fan, when i heard you were comin to the cubs i needed a new pair of pants, i didnt even care i just threw them away i was so excited. then i met you and you signed my ball... which im sure you couldnt even remember after signing millions of balls. So yeah back when i was twelve I had WPWS (which is if i read correctly just about the same thing you had with your heart) and i also had catheter(spelling?) ablation procedure. And i just think thats completely awesome. I was a huge fan originally and when i found out you had this extremely rare problem too i was destined to have you become the new favorite player of all time for me. So thank you for having heart problems too!

-Mike Lendi

mark, its your old buddy AJ. saw your blog so i had to sign up and take a chance to say whats up. sounds like things are great on your end. been keeping an eye on ya. can't believe nelly is back up. that guy won't go away. good for him. congrats on everything man. everything is great in naples, wife, two little boys, no ball at all, lot of huntin, fishin, and golfing. holla if you get a chance sometime. adam_johnson@pelusomovers.com (2398257952) good luck and tell heidi we said hello. check you out when i come into chitown, my sis-in-law lives there. be up sometime this summer. later and take care/

Hey Mark,

Ryan Bagley from Pascack Hills, HS in NJ and close family friend of the Fullers. Looking forward to seeing you play (again) tomorrow as I am making my first trip to Wrigley field. Congrats on your outstanding success in MLB!! Will give you a nice shout as you head to the plate tomorrow. Go Cubbies!

Way to go Mark. You are the glue. While the game was yet a blow-out, you put aside the desire to get a hit, and made sure the run scored, via a sacrafice fly. Perhaps the hitter before you knew that you would get the job done and looked for the big inning. Be that as it may, I was glad to see you come up in that situation. It is my hope that some teammates see what truly wins close games. The little things. go cubs
